PORTO MONTENEGRO

Our design was awarded joint first place in an invited competition for an “iconic” building in a new marina in a former naval port in the Bay of Kotor, Montenegro. Located on a prominent site at the entry to the marina, it would provide offices for Marina Operations, Harbour master, Customs and Police Authorities, along with public amenities and a Duty Free Shop, while catering for future conversion to restaurants and retail. The design was conceived as an ‘ex-voto’ (objects offered in gratitude or prayer, seen in a local church) for the spirit of the place which is undergoing rapid development. The materials used were was dark stained larch cladding, light blue tiles, and glow-in-the-dark concrete.

The award letter stated: “All the attendees were impressed by your vision of a landmark building. The design scored strongly on concept, Porto Montenegro identity, materials, technologies and transformability. Overall, the concept was judged to be visionary, exciting and relevant to our location and aspirations to create a landmark building.”
