We designed a roof extension to allow access to a large roof terrace in a conservation area in Holland Park, west London. The client wanted a minimal structure that maximised natural daylight into the maisonette below. With careful detailing, we were able to expose the structure, which was fabricated in one piece to avoid visible fixings. The staircase to the roof terrace was refurbished with a glass balustrade with a brass handrail. Included on the roof terrace was an outdoor kitchen, planting and benches along the perimeter, and a pull-out sun lounger. The project also included the refurbishment of the 3-storey maisonette, with the second floor living area opened up to create a light-filled open plan living/dining room and kitchen. Informing the design throughout was the careful balancing the traditional with the modern as you move up the building, along with maximising natural daylight and views out.
